Knowledge Management - Our Journey So Far

We have written these pages to explain our own experiences of understanding and starting to adopt knowledge management (KM).

Here you can learn what we have done and why we did it. Also, there are examples of what we did right, as well as what we did wrong.

It is the personal experience of a small public sector organisation. Some of it will be applicable to many organisations, some of it to very few, but we hope that it will be helpful to others who want to understand what a KM programme might entail.

Initial Scoping and Analysis

During 2003 we embarked on our KM journey. At the time our fourth strategic objective was to “Ensure best practice and consistency in producing and using West Midlands information and intelligence from different knowledge domains” and we thought that KM would be an important element in achieving this.

So, we decided to research what the needs of the region might be and how a KM program could support these needs. To do the work for us, and to help us develop our own strategy, we employed Knowledge Associates, a consultancy which specialises in knowledge management.

With Knowledge Associates we carried out a 6 month study to understand the current level of knowledge working within the region and how we might be able to assist the adoption of KM within it.
