The Changing Population Demographics chapter of our State of the Region Update Report 2007 presents evidence about the existing population of the West Midlands including future projections and migration figures. The report also considers the implications of changing population demographics on key policy themes and what this means for policy makers in the West Midlands.

This project explores attitudes, motivations and barriers to engagement in learning, skills and employment among disadvantaged groups and communities. The project consisted of a Jobcentre Plus survey of claimants followed by research with key groups and communities.

The rates of skills and qualification attainment by individuals in the West Midlands lag behind national trends. Our annual Regional Skills Assessment identifies the barriers faced by individuals in access to learning in order to upgrade their skills and qualifications, which need addressing. The Assessment also explores skills issues in relation to demographic changes in the West Midlands.
