The Society, Demography and Health theme group have been discussing the information and methodologies on measuring, and monitoring population movements to identify where gaps exist in the knowledge base.
The results of this work are two-fold:
The first will be a report to at the various methods and data sets people have used to measure population change at a local neighbourhood level, to synthesize these and then to apply them in a worked example within one local authority/PCT.
It is the Topic Group’s belief that this is currently the most pressing need, as ONS reviews should address the changes in larger geographies. In support of this work we would like to ask you if to share your experiences on in our discussion group.
The second piece of work will be a one day seminar that will look at the applied science of population research including measuring migration, triangulating data sources to validate population estimates and the ONS population estimates—the origins and impacts. A date in July for this event is yet to be finalised and will be announced shortly.
