This is the third, and last, of the update reports we publish in the interim years between the four year cycle of the main State of the Region Report. This report is supplementary to the main State of the Region Report 2004, 'Real Lives, Real Issues'.
The 2007 update focuses on two of the major challenges facing the region over the coming years, which will have wide-ranging impacts: climate change and changing population demographics.
An overarching chapter on external influences on the region sets the scene, bringing together some common threads and identifying some of the key intelligence gaps identified during the writing of the report.
State of the Region 2008
Following the completion of the four year cycle of State of the Region reporting, we undertook some research amongst users of the reports. This has led to some major changes to our approach to the State of the Region process which will be implemented during 2008. Details will be released through the website soon.

Datasets
As part of our continuing commitment to support the development of the regional and sub-regional evidence base we have assembled key indicators to accompany the report and presented these in a series of datasets, available to download below.
The indicators are consistent with those in the full State of the Region Report 2004. We regularly review and update the data as and when new data becomes available.
In 2007, we also presented these indicators through InstantAtlas maps, an interactive tool that displays data visually in a colour-coded atlas. The atlas geography can be set by government office region or local authority district to capture a wide range of data.
